Culture eats Strategy for Breakfast

This is a well-known comment by Peter Drucker.  The main reason it is known is because it is so true.  Culture is the foundation of any organization.  It’s the support that holds everything else up and together.

Understand this, I’m a guy that loves strategy.  It is sexy.  It is fun.  There is probably nothing more exciting when you are an executive in an organization than to be creating the strategy of your future.  Everyone is always trying to be more strategic and it is because it is so invigorating. When creating strategy, you get to make the decisions that take shape in the organization.

But what is true is that the greatest strategy ever invented won’t go around the block without a culture that will support it and make it happen.  Tend to your culture.  Observe it by observing yourself and your colleagues.  Make sure that you are creating a conscious innovative culture to carry your strategy around the world.
